Dreamscape: A Multisensory Sculptural Installation by Nelson Chow

An Ambiguous Escape into the Realm of Dreams

Dreamscape, a multimedia installation designed by Nelson Chow, offers visitors a unique opportunity to escape from reality and immerse themselves in a dreamlike experience. With its captivating form and interactive elements, Dreamscape invites guests to explore a world of imagination and wonder. This article delves into the inspiration, design, and realization of this extraordinary installation.

Dreamscape, a portmanteau of "dream" and "escape," encapsulates the essence of this design. Nelson Chow explains that the intention behind Dreamscape is to provide a pause for busy minds and transport visitors into a realm of ambiguity. In a time when travel is limited, Dreamscape aims to ignite the imagination and allow people to dream the impossible. It represents an exciting utopia and freedom that is accessible to all.

The unique properties of Dreamscape are immediately apparent. The voluptuous sculptural form appears to float above the K11 MUSEA Bohemian Garden, enticing guests with its ethereal presence. From a distance, the installation resembles an illuminated white shell emerging from a billowing cloud. Up close, three arches anchored onto six feet create an ephemeral shared experience. Inside, 250 illuminated bubble lamps are carefully timed to evoke the sensation of dreaming in a sleeping cloud.

Creating Dreamscape presented several challenges for the design team. The structure had to be weatherproof, durable, and lightweight for outdoor display. Additionally, it needed to be easily disassembled, transported, and reassembled. The placement of the illuminated bubbles required meticulous calibration to ensure both visual appeal and ergonomic friendliness. The lighting program and wiring had to create the illusion of a sleeping cloud while synchronizing with the mist performance that occurs every 20 minutes.

Dreamscape's technical specifications are as follows: H2600 x W3500 x D3500 (mm). The installation has been on display at K11 MUSEA, Victoria Dockside, Hong Kong, since September 2021 and will continue until March 2022. Afterward, it will be transported to other K11 premises around China, providing more audiences with the opportunity to experience this captivating design.

One of the key considerations during the design process was ensuring that Dreamscape catered to visitors of all ages. Safety and accessibility were paramount, with measures in place to accommodate children running underneath and adults standing and observing. The installation is open day and night, offering different lighting experiences combined with mist to create mesmerizing moments. Each bubble lamp's positioning was carefully planned to be visually pleasing and ergonomically safe.

Dreamscape has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is a testament to Dreamscape's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature. The installation meets professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics. It provides fulfillment and evokes positive emotions, contributing to a better world.

Experience the enchantment of Dreamscape, where reality blurs and dreams come alive. Nelson Chow's visionary design invites you to step into a world of imagination and embark on a multisensory journey like no other.
